DC Comics Fan Family and Capstone Writing Contest Hero Selects Charity Recipient

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Oct. 22, 2013 – Dr. Nicholas Von Bergen, a pediatric cardiologist and winning hero in the Super Hero inspired writing contest sponsored by DC Comics Fan Family and Capstone, has selected the Pediatric Arrhythmia Outreach Fund to receive a $2,500 donation. Dr. Von Bergen received the donation to the charity of his choice as a winning prize after one of his patients nominated him in a nationwide writing contest.

The “Be a Super Hero. Read!” contest encouraged children to write about a real hero in their lives, describing the human powers, such as courage, kindness, or generosity, which make their selected hero special. Katelyn Soldatke, then a 6th grader at Rome Corners Intermediate School in Oregon, Wis., was selected by her peers as the first place winner in June. Katelyn wrote about Dr. Von Bergen, who performed two heart surgeries to treat her cardiac arrhythmia called supra-ventricular tachycardia.
Dr. Von Bergen’s charity, the Pediatric Arrhythmia Outreach Fund, supports medical mission trips each year to Mexico, providing care to patients with abnormal heart rhythms. The charity is an extension of the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital, where Dr. Von Bergen works as a physician who treats and cures children of abnormal heart rhythms.

“I was so touched and honored to be nominated by Katelyn as her real-life super hero for this contest. After hearing about this fund Katelyn herself has raised $500 additional dollars to donate. It’s such a great example of the reverberations of generosity that a contest such as this can inspire,” said Von Bergen.
