Coughlan Family Receives Business of the Year Award
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Oct. 7, 2014 – Coughlan Companies, Inc. announces its Principals Robert and Jim Coughlan are recipients of the 2014 Family Business of the Year Award, presented by the University of St. Thomas’ John M. Morrison Center. Part of the Entrepreneur Awards program, the Family Business of the Year Award recognizes families who demonstrate a strong commitment to community, family, and business leadership. The Coughlan family was honored at the awards gala on Oct. 1 at the School of Law on the university’s Minneapolis campus.
“I am delighted for the whole Coughlan team, the Coughlan Family, and especially Jim and Bob that they have been honored in this way. It has been a privilege to work with Capstone over the last few years as they developed these ground breaking strategies and products in digital publishing. First, is a real lesson to all of our students that digital innovation is happening all around us in all industries from traditional to new. Second, the story of the Coughlan family illustrates that HOW you carry out your business is as important as the result. It is their dedication to their community, their employees, and struggling readers everywhere that has really driven their success,” said John F. McVea, Program Director, Executive MBA, University of St. Thomas.
The Coughlan’s rich history with St. Thomas dates back more than a century starting in the early 1900s with a gift of stone used to construct buildings on the St. Paul campus. This iconic stone gives St. Thomas buildings its signature look still today. In 1938, Robert and Jim’s father Thomas P. Coughlan received the Tommie Award which embodies the ideals of St. Thomas Aquinas through scholarship, leadership, and campus involvement from the university. More recently, the Coughlans have served on the Family Business Center Board and been involved in the center’s conference.
Earlier this year, Robert Coughlan was recognized with a 2014 Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award for the upper Midwest. Coughlan Companies has received recognition by several organizations for its philanthropic efforts in communities and for promoting the health and well-being of its employees, including the Greater Mankato Area United Way’s 2013 Large Business of the Year Award, the 2012 Minnesota Keystone Award, the 2012 Minnesota Society for Human Resource Management Workplace Well-being Awards, 2009 Greater Mankato Growth Business Pathfinder Award, and the 2009 Mankato Area Council for Quality Award.
Coughlan Companies has a rich history of philanthropy in local communities and those abroad. The Coughlan Companies Fund concentrates its efforts on promoting literacy and social responsibility. Since 2000, the Fund has invested more than three million dollars (both in-kind and monetary) to improve the communities where its employees work and live.
