February 7, 2013 10:47 AM

MANKATO, Minn. – Feb. 7, 2013 – Coughlan Companies, Inc., the holding company for Capstone, Mankato-Kasota Stone, Inc., and Jordan Sands, LLC, is the recipient of the Greater Mankato Area United Way’s 2013 Large Business of the Year Award in recognition of its outstanding employees’ generosity, both financially and through volunteer involvement. Coughlan Companies was recognized at the United Way’s annual Thank You Event luncheon earlier today at South Central College’s Heritage Hall.

“We are honored to receive the distinction of the Large Business of the Year Award. I am proud of the enthusiasm and giving spirit of our employees. Despite economic challenges, our employees recognized the increasing needs of their community and contributed to help make a difference,” said Lisa Hanson, Coughlan Companies’ Director of Corporate Giving.

Coughlan Companies is in its 11th year partnering with the United Way’s Book for Kids Program, providing books to children ages 2 months to 5 years in the greater Mankato area. The Books for Kids program is designed to instill a joy of reading by providing books and parenting resources to families who live or work in the area. In 2012, Coughlan Companies donated more than 50,000 books to the program.

Each year Coughlan Companies also holds five United Way campaigns for their employees working in their Edina, Minn, Mankato, Minn, and Chicago, Ill., offices. In 2012 employees hosted a bake sale and chili bar at the different locations, raising awareness of the United Way programs. Overall, more than 65 employees increased their giving over last year and 67 employees gave at the #1 Club level or above. The company also encourages employees to volunteer in their communities by offering paid time off during the work day each year. In 2012, nearly 100 employees volunteered at various United Way agencies.

Coughlan Companies recognizes that healthy, thriving communities depend on involved citizens, organizations and corporate partners for momentum. Its Corporate Giving Program lends support, services, and resources to community organizations working to improve the quality of life for the people they serve. Coughlan Companies inspires others to ever-higher levels of personal and professional excellence, and fosters pride in its communities.
