Capstone Showcases Cool, Kid-Friendly Comics and Books, Author Events, and Giveaways at Comic-Con International
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – July 23, 2014 – Capstone, a leading publisher of children’s books and digital products and services, will feature some of the best in kids’ comics and super hero books at San Diego Comic-Con International, July 24-27. In celebration of “Batman Day” on July 23, Capstone will mark the 75thanniversary by showcasing many of its most popular BATMAN books in the Capstone booth. Highlights from Capstone’s schedule at booth 1316 include a raffle for original artwork from the Eisner nominated title Here I Am, free samplers of Jellaby, special author and illustrator appearances, and DC Comics Super Hero giveaway items, such as book bags, posters, and postcards.
Capstone will hold a drawing for original artwork from the 2014 Eisner nominated Here I Am by Patti Kim, illus. by Sonia Sánchez. Celebrated for its poignant story and bold illustrations, the emotional, wordless narrative follows a child’s immigration journey to the United States. The New York Times calls it “winsome” and praises the artwork, “the images vibrate with energy and detail.”
A limited number of Jellaby samplers from this year’s Free Comic Book Day will be given away, while supplies last. The critically-acclaimed 2006 Eisner nominated graphic novel by Kean Soo is back in print by popular demand. Special editions of Jellaby: The Lost Monster and Jellaby: Monster in the City featuring redesigned covers by artist Kazu Kibuishi, known for his work on the Flight and Amulet series, will be available for purchase.
Capstone will host special appearances by authors in the booth. Emmy Award Nominee Scott Sonneborn will sign his newest book The Frankenstein Journals at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, July 25. Author, professor, and 2013 Eisner Award judge Dr. Katie Monnin will sign copies of her latest book Teaching Reading Comprehension With Graphic Texts at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 26.
Monnin will also appear in the panel discussion “Getting the Most out of Graphic Novels in Your Classroom and Library” at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, July 25 in Room 29A. Author and educator Dr. Meryl Jaffe (Using Content-Area Graphic Texts for Learning) will participate in four panels with acclaimed children’s comics creators and educators, including: “CBLDF: Using Graphic Novels in Education” (12:00 p.m. onJuly 24, Room30CDE),“Kids' Heroes, Capes and Journeys: Does One Size Fit All?” (4:00 p.m. on July 24, Room: 29A), “CBLDF: Graphic Novels and Their Turbulent Past: Now Classroom Tools of Tolerance” (12:00 p.m. on July 25, Room 30CDE), and “From Snidely Whiplash to Voldemort and Back: The Guys (and Gals?) We Love to Hate” (11:30 a.m. on July 27, Room 8).
Looking ahead to New York Comic-Con, Capstone announces it will unveil a new direct to consumer ebook program which includes an ebook reader app available on the iOS platform in October. To celebrate Batman’s 75thanniversary, everyone who downloads the app will receive a free ebook titled Prisoner of the Penguin featuring BATMAN.
