Capstone and DC Comics Fan Family Announce Writing Contest Winner

Student Wins Trip to Warner Bros. Animation Studios, Hero Wins Donation to Charity
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – June 4, 2013 – Capstone and DC Comics Fan Family, the online hub for DC Entertainment family-friendly news and information on DC Comics Super Heroes, announce the winner in their Super Hero inspired writing contest for fans in grades 3-6. The nationwide contest “Be a Super Hero. Read!” encouraged children to write about a real hero in their lives, describing the human powers, such as courage, kindness, or generosity, which make their selected hero special.
Katelyn Soldatke, a 6th grader at Rome Corners Intermediate School in Oregon, Wis., has been selected by her peers as the first place winner. Katelyn wrote about her hero, Dr. Nicholas Von Bergen, a pediatric cardiologist who performed two heart surgeries on her to treat her cardiac arrhythmia called supra-ventricular tachycardia.
“I had a broken heart, and I am happy to say it’s fixed now! There are so many people who helped fix my heart, and Dr.Von Bergen was one of them. He fixes children’s hearts every day,” wrote Katelyn. “Dr.Von Bergen did both of my heart surgeries; in total I had two. My first heart surgery did not go well. Dr.Von Bergen couldn’t fix my heart. He was very disappointed and was determined to fix it during another surgery, which took place a year later. My second heart surgery went perfectly. I know he is a good person, because he didn’t just heal my heart, he healed my whole life. Because Dr.Von Bergen fixed my heart I can now do all of the things I love to do, this is why Dr.Von Bergen is my hero.”
Katelyn wins a VIP trip for four to tour Warner Bros. Animation Studios and DC Entertainment Headquarters, the home of SUPERMAN™ and BATMAN™, and other unique prizes. Dr. Nicholas Von Bergen receives a $2,500 donation to the charity of his choice.
“We’re so proud of all of our young finalists, but want to offer special congratulations to Katelyn on her exceptionally touching story. One of the most important lessons we were reminded of through our contest is that real-life super heroes are everywhere, and may not even know how deeply their actions touch others,” said Ashley Andersen Zantop, Capstone Group Publisher and General Manager.
Children ultimately decided the first place winner by voting for their favorite entry at www.CapstoneSuperHero.com/Contest.html. Cumulatively, the finalists received more than 13,500 votes, with the winning entry narrowly pulling ahead in the final days of voting.
All of the finalists will receive a set of the new SUPERMAN™ book series, The Man of Steel chapter books:
• Ben Clark, grade 5. Ben’s hero is his older brother, a member of the U.S. Air Force.
• Cora Eder, grade 3. Cora’s hero is her dad, an Iraq War veteran and police officer.
• Lauren McCartney, grade 6. Lauren’s hero is Debbie Portner, her counselor.
• Semaj Write, grade 3. Semaj’s hero is Mrs. Benford, her 3rd grade teacher.
