Booklist - Hazel Rochman

The detailed information about the annals of slavery as well as the hands-on instructions for finding out about the history will draw students to this title in the Research It! series. Whether the subject is an overview or nailed to particulars about the capture of slaves in Africa, the journey across the ocean, conditions in the U.S., or the fight for emancipation, the chapters focus on primary and secondary sources: how to find them (including online); how to evaluate them (including questioning primary sources for who they are and which side they are on); how not to get bogged down in too much detail; how to document sources; and much more. Despite his instructions, Spilsbury provides no source notes for direct quotes, but with a detailed bibliography and glossary, the format works very well with the contemporary technical know-how about accessing elemental history, writing about it, and documenting it.
