Children's Literature Comprehensive Database - Charles E. Kreinbucher
What are “needs” and “wants”? This early reader takes the mature concepts of identifying needs, differentiating them from wants, and making choices between the two. Needs and wants are explicitly defined, and examples are provided in both text and illustration. This book is very successful as a beginning nonfiction reader. The structure is appropriate to introduce subject-specific words, content and concepts. Included is a table of contents, a glossary, an index, a “Read More” section and a code for accessing a list of age-appropriate and topic-specific Internet sites. The images support young readers in understanding the text. The sentences are simple, direct and easy to comprehend. The vocabulary is repetitive and comprised of basic sight words. The “Read More” section on the last page provides a reading list of additional books on the same topic. The book ends with a question, providing an opportunity for readers to interact with the text and extend their learning.
