This September, Picture Window Books will launch its new nonfiction picture book series, Wild Animals. Stunning artwork and simple text will captivate readers ages 5 through 8 as they learn about the life cycles of different wild animals. These books follow the path of each animal from birth to adult, including how they feed, where they live, and how they survive. The books include diagrams, an index, fun facts, a glossary, an "at the library" section and safe internet sites. TItles in the new series include A Baboon Grows Up, A Hippopotamus Grows Up, A Lion Grows Up, A Rhinoceros Grows Up, A Tiger Grows Up, and An Elephant Grows Up.

The Wild Animals series, by Anastasia Suen, is a very well done introduction to popular wild animals for young children. Each book in the series follows a male or female offspring from birth to adulthood. All the animals are popular zoo or circus attractions that most children will be familiar with. Included are the elephant, the hippopotamus, the baboon, the lion, the rhinoceros, and the tiger. Simple, but informative, text is accompanied by bright, colorful, and accurate illustrations by Michael L. Denman and William J. Huiett. Each volume includes a diagram of the animal mentioned in the title, together with four or five interesting facts about it; a glossary of terms used; and a bibliography that lists books for further reading and instructions for using the Web site FactHound to locate additional information. The entire series is very appealing, and I recommend it highly for preschools, day-care centers, and early elementary school libraries.
