What’s The Point?

A New K-5 Reading and Writing Expository Text Program from Tony Stead

“What's the Point?” is a question we ask of authors who are sharing information. As we craft informative/explanatory essays of our own, we keep key points in mind to guide us as we write. Consider that the Common Core State Standards call out specific strategies for students to use in both analyzing and writing informative/explanatory text. What's the Point? includes resources and topics that are sure to engage students and send them on their way to success in both the analysis and crafting of informative/explanatory texts. The student books are written by students and include student-created art. Each student book features and explores different topics related to an engaging topic or question.

Program Overview

Capstone Classroom is proud to introduce another exciting new K-5 reading and writing program from internationally known educational author and consultant Tony Stead. This new program focuses on reading and writing expository text. It includes science and social studies topics that are sure to engage your students.

This new program is unlike any others because the Mentor Texts are written by students, for students. Each student book include student-created art, and explores different topics related to an engaging question. The teacher’s guide provides an instructional plan that moves students through the writing process, from brainstorming and research to organizing and drafting to revising, editing, and publishing.

  • The Teacher Resource Guides with lessons, rubrics, checklists, and organizers that will help you instruct, organize, and assess and will provide scaffolding and support for your students

Program Components

  • Five student books at each grade, grades K-5. Books are student-written under the direction of program author Tony Stead
  • Big Books for shared reading: one each for grades K, 1, and 2. Big Books incorporate excerpts of the text from the student books and as well as new text

Big Books Package

The Big Books and supporting mentor texts provide many examples of strongly crafted informational texts to help students answer engaging topics or questions. With all the small books written by students, these texts tackle topics from the Mentor Texts as well as new text. An informative piece in the Big Book includes call-outs to help students remember what features are important in crafting informational texts. Use these mentor texts to help learners analyze informative/expository texts and to identify features of these texts before they write their own.

Tony Stead
Tony Stead

Australian educator and internationally known literacy specialist Tony Stead has both taught in elementary schools and lectured at universities. Past president of the Melbourne Chapter of the Australian Reading Association, he is the author of numerous publications, including Is That a Fact? Teaching Nonfiction Writing and Explorations in Nonfiction Writing. Tony is also the author of two writing programs: What’s Your Point? Reading and Writing Opinions and What’s the Point? Reading and Writing Expository Text. Tony has been a keynote speaker at hundreds of conferences and works with school districts around the world in literacy consulting and teaching.
