  • Capstone Publishers Adopts Lexile Measures April 15, 2009
  • MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. & DURHAM, N.C. – April 15, 2009 – Capstone Publishers, the leading publisher of children’s books for school and public libraries, and MetaMetrics®, Inc., developer of the widely adopted Lexile Framework® for Reading, today announced that the companies are collaborating to make Lexile® measures available for all newly published English titles in Capstone Publishers’ imprints: Capstone Press, Compass Point Books, Picture Window Books, Stone Arch Books and Heinemann-Raintree. Capstone Publishers joins the more than 150 trade and textbook publishers who offer Lexile measures as a way to connect readers with books based on their abilities and interests.

“For over 15 years, Capstone Publishers has supported the distinct reading needs of preK to high school students with our high-quality nonfiction and high-interest fiction reading materials,” said Tom Ahern, CEO of Capstone Publishers. “With the addition of Lexile measures to our books, we are providing teachers, librarians and parents with a valuable tool for matching readers of all ages and ability levels with appropriate reading materials.” To date, MetaMetrics has measured more than 3,100 Capstone Publishers titles.
Moving forward, Capstone Publishers will offer Lexile measures for all of its newly published materials, which well exceed 600 titles annually, and will continue to make these measures available in its catalogs and on its e-commerce Web sites. These titles also will be added to the Lexile Book Database and “Find a Book” Web site (www.lexile.com/findabook). Teachers, librarians and parents use these free Web resources to find books that match both a student’s interests and reading ability.

“With its adoption of Lexile measures, Capstone Publishers has demonstrated its commitment to helping all children develop the reading skills necessary for success in school and in life,” said MetaMetrics President Malbert Smith III, Ph.D. “I applaud Capstone Publishers—and all trade and textbook publishers—for appreciating the unique value that Lexile measures add in connecting children with materials that will support them in their literacy development.”

Recognized as the most widely adopted reading measure, Lexile measures are used at the school level in various capacities in all 50 states. Each year, more than 28 million Lexile measures are reported from state and national assessments, classroom assessments and reading programs, representing about half of U.S. students.

The Lexile Framework is an educational tool that connects readers with reading materials using a common measure called a Lexile. What makes the Lexile Framework unique, and what has led to its widespread adoption, is that it measures both reading ability and text difficulty on the same developmental scale. When used together, Lexile reader measures and Lexile text measures allow educators, parents and students to find books and other materials that meet and challenge a reader’s unique ability and interests. Currently, more than 115,000 books, 80 million articles and 60,000 Web sites have Lexile measures, and the number of resources with Lexile measures continues to grow.
